How’s this for a view!

In just a few weeks , if all goes as planned, I hope to be standing on that very same rock with a half a dozen of my COPD friends.

The brainchild of my Boston marathon walking partner Mike Mc Bride, the “COPD Mt Evans Challenge” as he calls it, is simply about a bunch of friends with severe lung disease, getting together for a day and hiking to the summit of one of the tallest mountains in the Rockies of Colorado…. just for the heck of it! No, we’re not going to scale an entire mountain, but we will be walking up the steepest portion of one.

Starting in Idaho Springs, elevation 8,700 ft, we’re gonna drive up the mountain road 9 miles to Summit Lake, which is situated at the 12,800 ft level. From there we’re gonna hike the last 5 miles on foot up to the summit of the mountain, which sits 14,220 ft above sea level. My COPD friends will be using high -flow oxygen @ 15 lpm to make the trek up the mountain I hopefully, will not need supplemental O2, but I’ll be closely monitoring my O2 sats just in case.

As you can see in this photo taken earlier this year during a race up the mountain, the grade along certain portions of the road is pretty steep. The part that we’re gonna be doing, gains approximately 1600 ft in elevation in just over 5 miles.

( Mike Mc Bride and Roxlyn Cole testing out their oxygen equip)

What makes this particular walk such a challenge for me (and for the other lungers), is the altitude and the steepness of the climb.
Excluding being a passenger in a pressurized airplane, this will be the highest altitude my body has ever been exposed to. The last walk I did that involved a mountain, was back in 2008 when I did the <a href="http://breathinstephen.com/i-think-ill-go-climb-a-mountain-2/"target=_blank>ET midnight marathon in the Nevada desert. And while it was a much longer walk ( 13.1 miles) , we only reached a maximum elevation of 5,500 feet during the race. The summit of Mt Evans is almost 3 times higher.

My lungs are not a big fan of climbing hills. I can barely walk uphill the two blocks it takes to reach my house, let alone 5.5 miles up the side of a mountain. Putting the physical challenges aside though, the main reason I wanna do this is, is to take in the sheer beauty of it all. I think Mountains are awesome.

Hey Stephen,

Read your website have to say it was quite intriguing! Just want to say you are a hero and a role model for me. Quite amazing what you’ve been through and I take my hat off to you dude! I am a 16 year old guy from Victoria BC Canada writing to you from my hospital bed on the pediatric 4d north tower. I also have neutrophillic predominant asthma I used to have eosinophillic asthma as my IGE level was 16,000 ug. Since then it has changed into neutrohilic and harder to take control of – I feel like you. Sorry if that offends you because I know it offends me when people ask me in the hospital what are you here for? and i say asthma they reply with oh yeah my son has asthma blah blah blah when they really have no idea…when I read your website I saw life through my moms eyes Pretty scary since im used to it. But I was wondering did you ever have high IGE at one point and then your lungs like changed into neutrophillic predominant? and like when you walk don’t you get out of breath at all? it was quite amazing how you walked al those miles. And have you ever used oxygen at home? And whats you’re criteria before you get to go home? for me its Q4 Nebs and 50% FEV1 which takes about 2 weeks every admission! WTF such a flipping frustration I’ve never met anyone like me before and I seem to see it in you. I’ve also been to national jewish hospital in america for further evaluation from ” the big shots” . My FEV1 varys from 45- 50% and FVC of 65%.

Drugs – Spiriva ( for copd) have you ever been on it?
Oxygen 1-2L nasal prongs when in hosp
Formorteral (oxeeze) 12mcg
Ventolin Nebs Q4
Prednisone 10mg one day 5mg the next alternating when in hops 60mg for 3 days since i had a steroid myopathy I cant get steroids for a long time because there worried abut that happening again ( Diaphragm paralysis) my diaphragm stopped working which made it hard for me to breath was on Bi pap for 6 months
I HATE PRED!
I am also getting a bronchoscopy which should tell them more about whats going on, as requested from Denver National jewish.

I’m sorry if im bugging you – just thought your page was really inspiring and something to look up to. Thanks for your time Stephen

Darcy Ablak

Yikes.. that’s pretty warm weather to be doing a 31 mile racewalk in, but if anyone can do it, Dave can. Luckily the relative humidity is supposed to below at 25%.

Jeff Savage will be providing some commentary and photos of the event on his website<a href="http://www.racewalk.com/"target=_blank"> RACEWALK.COM The<a href="http://www.iaaf.org/wrw10/index.html" target=_blank"> IAAF will have the official results well.

Congrats to two of my favorite running people, Hansi and <a href="http://r-cane.blogspot.com/"target=_blank">Francis, for completing the Boston to Big Sur Challenge this past Sunday. These 2 wonderfully nutty people, along with a couple hundred other crazy people, ran BOTH the Boston marathon in Massachusetts AND the Big Sur marathon in California just 6 days apart. Two tough marathons in less than a week on opposite sides of the country. Francis came all the way from Toronto Canada to do these races.

At Hansi’s Carmel home the day before the Big Sur marathon

To make the challenge even more rewarding, Hansi ended up taking 1st place at Big Sur. Francis had respectable finish times in both races as well. Heck, between the two of them, they’ve probably finished more than a hundred marathons in just about every country on the planet. My hat’s off to the both of them!

Read <a href="http://r-cane.blogspot.com/2010/05/2010-boston-marathon-report.html"target=_blank">Frans 2010 Boston marathon race report. Lots of pics and vids too.

Rather than bore you with a mile-by-mile account of everything that happened during this entire 7 hour-17 minute very fun but challenging, and at times a excruciatingly painful journey, this year I decided only to post what I can consider to be the highlights. The experience was a little overwhelming and with so many pictures , videos and texts to prepare and post, I’m gonna have to dole them out little by little over the coming days.

But, first let me start by acknowledging some wonderful people who helped make this a truly special day for me.

My walking partner in the race, Mike Mc Bride.
Our super cool spotters, John and Chris from the BAA
Our fantastic crew, Pete from<a href="http://apria.com/home/"target=_blank"> Apria Health Care, and Tom and Brett from Caire Medical and Brett’s wife Shay.
The wonderful folks at the <a href="http://www.asthmainstitute.pitt.edu/index.html"target=_blank">University of Pittsburgh’s Asthma Institute
And finally, our special course guide, the one and only <a href="http://teamshep.wordpress.com/"target=_blank">Lis Shepard , who drove the spectators wild and who stuck by me the entire distance just so she could cross the finish line with me. A pretty awesome lady I’d say!

Introducing
“TEAM WHEEZY”

(hey…where’s Lis at? )

( Oh that’s…right, she’s yacking it up with the Boston Globe reporter dude)

*******************************************************************

So here’s a collection of unedited short clips that I took with my phone camera. Sorry, the video quality isn’t too good, but I wanted to give you a sense of what it’s like to be the first AND last people out on the Boston course. This pandemonium goes on goes on for 7 FULL hours!! See if you can hear my name being shouted during the middle and end portions of the clip. Every time my spotter John would see I was having problems with my breathing or my legs, he’s get the crowd cheering for me. It was like a magic potion that kept me going.

26 miles and 7 hours later , watch how Lizzy works the crowd and helps me make it to the finish line 6 minutes later. Again, this clip is a little long, but I wanted give you an idea of just how many die hard spectators waited for us to finish and how much fun it was to have Liz along for the ride.

I’ll have tons more photos and video clips in upcoming posts….

Chris is an awesome racewalker and coach. It was a video of Chris racewalking(<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTUo_fOFx-Y"target=_blank">The long and winding road) that got me interested in the sport 5 years ago. I finally had the pleasure of meeting him at <a href="http://racewalking.org"target=_blank">Dave Mc Governs advanced racewalking clinic in Solana Beach last October.

There might not be very many of us (only 26 this year) and we might not be as sleek as the other runners, but there are some pretty amazing athletes who compete in the Boston marathon’s mobility impaired division.

Take for example Keven Counihan. Kevin lost part of his right foot in an accident with a lawnmower. 15 years later, he was in a near-fatal car accident that caused extensive knee, arm, hip, chest, and shoulder damage. Despite all this, and after years of rehabilitation, Kevin focused on running again and set his sights on the marathon distance. In the 7 years since he started marathon running again, Kevin has finished 99 marathons, and hopes to complete his 100th at this years Boston marathon! Pretty amazing Id say. Check out this recent <a href="http://www.wickedlocal.com/beverly/features/x749198669/North-of-Boston-Marathon-Profile-Kevin-Counihan"target=_blank">article and Video about Kevin.

Then there’s Kelly Luckett, another awesome athlete. This is her 6th consecutive Boston marathon. She’s also done 21 Ultrathons (50ks) and over 80 shorter races. Kelly came in at 3rd place in this division in lasts years race. Way to go Kelly!

Can’t forget this guy. He is absolutely amazing to watch. <a href="http://www.marathonchamp.com/home/"target=_blank">Richard Whitehead is a congenital double amputee from the UK and quite a celebrity there. He has broken several world’s records, including the 2009 Rome marathon. I was there when he became the first amputee athlete in history, to break the 3 hour mark in a marathon. Absolutely incredible!

Last but certainly not least, there’s my good friend, Mike Mc Bride, who climbs skyscrapers for fun. Mike will pull an 80lb oxygen cart behind him for 26.2 miles. The fact that he does what he does, given his type of lung disease, still blows me away. He may not be lightning fast, but he has more fortitude and guts than most healthy people half his age. Check out this recent article in the <a href="http://www.boston.com/yourtown/melrose/articles/2010/04/15/tales_from_the_tail_end/?s_campaign=8315"target=_blank">Boston Globe

So, how does it feel to stand next to these phenomenal athletes at the starting line in Hopkinton, Massachusetts? IT FEELS INCREDIBLE !!

You might be surprised by how many people it takes to get 2 severely lung challenged athletes and an 80 lb oxygen cart across the finish line of the world’s most prestigious foot race.

    Introducing the crew !

Our spotters……………………………………Lizzy and Chuck

Not only I am privileged to participate again in this incredible race with my good friend Mike Mc Bride, but this year we have the pleasure of having <a href="http://teamshep.wordpress.com/"target=_blank">Lizzy along for the ride. Liz will be Mikes official course guide and will also be helping me out by carrying some of my medications and other supplies. Also on the course with us again will be Chuck, our wonderful spotter from last year. Chuck will tail us on the course on his bicycle to make sure we don’t get trampled by the other runners or slowed down by over-zealous spectators as we pass by. We’re very lucky to get him again.

Our support team………………………..Tom………………………….Brett…………………………….Peter

Tom and Brett from Caire Medical along with Peter from <a href="http://apria.com/home/"target=_blank">Apria Health Care will be providing us with transportation to the starting line, and will also be providing logistical support for Mikes Oxygen equipment along course. Mike’s tanks have to be switched out about every 6 miles along the course. His crew stays in constant radio contact with our spotter Chuck, so that they know exactly when and where on the course to do the change outs. They can switch out all of his tanks in less than a minute. It’s pretty amazing to watch.

Without the help of these wonderful people , it would be really difficult to pull this thing off. Thanks Guys (and Gals)! We really appreciate it.

(PS…Sorry, got my Toms and Rons mixed up earlier.)

I just want to take a few moments to honor the life of a good, kind person. His name is Jim Cady. The husband, father and best friend of one of my racewalking buddies, Vickie. Jim was a very kind, soft spoken, but courageous person.

An avid skier, Jim wasn’t a racewalker himself, but he would often come to San Francisco to cheer the rest of us on during our races. Jim also treated me to my first <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/Baycitywalker/MyFirstBaseballGame?feat=directlink"target=_blank">Giants Baseball game.

Surrounded by his family who absolutely adored him, Jim passed away on Feb 19th from an extremely rare form of lung cancer.

Jim was about my age, and though he had been battling his disease for years with weekly chemotherapy treatments, you never heard him complain about it. I was continually amazed by his perseverance, and somehow always figured that he would out live me.

Till we meet again Jim, addio amico mio!

[Not lookin too bad for someone who was on a <a href="http://s30.photobucket.com/albums/c335/Baycitywalker/?action=view&current=vv040.flv"target=_blank">ventilator just 11 days earlier..eh?]

I’m not totally out of the woods yet and I don’t want to jinx myself, but for the first time in 2 weeks, I actually feel like a human being again. I can breath!
To celebrate, I went ahead and got the first of those 3 goodies that I promised myself…..namely, a haircut! (Yikes…I look a little too str8 now). The new shoes and the Manilow Paris Las Vegas show tickets are in the mail.

You know with all the suffering that’s been going on in the world lately, I feel extremely fortunate in so many ways. I may have really bad asthma, but I also have access to some of the best medical care on the planet. I’m surrounded by caring people, and blessed with the support of others who know what’s it like to live with a chronic disease. I would say I’m pretty lucky and have very little to complain about.

And in case you haven’t heard, <a href="http://severeasthma.org"target=_blank">SARP is now on<a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?ref=name&id=100000476653004#/group.php?gid=252007888822"target=_blank"> Facebook. Well, I think I got quite a bit accomplished in the week I spend trying to clean up my blog. For the most part, I’m pretty happy with the results. But what a pain in the butt!

I must have done over a thousand individual edits just to get things to look and function they I want….and I still didn’t finish it all. I did manage however, to create some custom templates for my tabbed pages, which I think came out pretty good. Much easier to read without all the sidebar clutter.

And speaking of makeovers, a special thank you to <a href="http://asthmadaytoday.wordpress.com/"target=_blank">Kerri for spicing up my <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/Baycitywalker"target=_blank'>Youtube channel.

She created this fun background for me

I noticed she redecorated her own blog header as well . We breathless folks are so talented! ( well, at least some of us are)

Sorry, this race report is a little late in coming, but I didn’t want my little prison stint to over shadow all the good things about this race.

First let me say what a pleasure it was to finally meet the famous<a href="http://teamshep.wordpress.com/"target=_blank"> Miss Dizzy Lizzy and some of the other <a href="http://racewalking.org"target=_blank">Mc Govern alumni who trekked in from all over the country to do this race. Talk about a ball of energy, Liz has enough enthusiasm for 100 racewalkers!

Liz and a friend of hers, Elizabeth and myself, all met up at the race Expo on Friday. Inside the Expo building they had this huge banner that actually had Lizzy’s photo on it, that they had captured at this very same Rock&Roll race 2 years ago. Naturally she had to take a picture of herself standing in front of the image of herself…..pretty cool.

We did a once through of the Expo, I didn’t buy anything, but Liz bought a pair of her favorite shoes .After that we all headed over to the hotel coffee shop and chit-chatted for a couple hours. It was great hearing everyones race stories.

On the morning of the race I managed to get to San Jose a little before 6:30 am. I parked over at the HP pavillion arena where there were already hundreds of people beginning to fill the parking lot. Good thing I got there an hour and a half early. From the parking lot, it was a full mile walk to the starting area of race.

This was a much bigger event than I thought it would be. They had something like 12,500 participants doing this race and the streets were filling fast. They had 13 starting corrals extending out about 4 blocks from the actual start line. One thing I noticed right off the bat, was how many Porta potties they had set up. I kid you not, there were hundreds of them lined up side by side , on both sides of the main street and dozens more on the side streets. This is the first event of this size Ive been too , where there were NO lines to use the johns! . At an event this size , you can usually expect to wait 30 minutes to use the toilets. In fact, thats one of the reasons I wanted to get here early. Hats off to the promoters for that one.

At about 15 minutes before the start , Liz called me and we all somehow managed to find each other in this massive crowd. Liz made it easier by wearing her famous “Ears”. After some quick photo taking, we all went over to our respective corrals ( which they packed like sardines) and waited for this huge sea of people to start moving. Once the gun went off, it took about 10 minutes for the runners in the 12th corral to make it across the starting line.

And were OFF….. As always ,I waited till the pack thinned out , which happened pretty fast, and then I pulled over to the left side of the road. I didn’t really have a chance to stretch before the race, so for the first mile or so, my shins were killing me. I knew though, that as I warmed up, the pain would diminish. The next couple of miles would be my warm up mode. This is usually the part of a race where I try to find a comfortable pace and the easiest position on the road itself to walk, usually the center or the crest of the road where its more even. If theres a yellow or white dividing line on the road , I’ll usually hug that line and racewalk right down the middle of it. ( it’s a good way to practice your technique too).

The course itself had a very suburban feel. It was basically flat and meandered in and out of various neighborhoods, most of them tree lined , upscale and very beautiful….Lots of mansions too. I can see now why people pay so much to live here.

Somewhere around the mile and a half mark , I passed Elizabeth. I was going to walk with her for a while, but decided that I needed to bank some time while I still had my lung power. I told her that she would probably pass me up in the last miles of the race. Some how that never happened, and I didn’t see her again until after the race.

It was about mile 2 where we hit the first watering station and thats when it really hits me, of just how long a 13 mile race really is. I would have to pass 6 more of these aid stations before finishing the race. It was also about this time, that I got in the mood to racewalk more and more. With my headphones and music cranked up, I was pretty much oblivious to what was happening around me. The diversion of music also gives me the courage to racewalk in huge crowds without getting too embarrassed. One runner lady who did pass me, tapped me on my shoulder and told me what a nice butt I had , and how she had been been watching my hips for the last 1/2 miles. I just laughed and continued to racewalk. I had seen lots of other walkers on the course swinging there arms, power walking or speed walking (which is not real racewalking), so I felt totally comfortable doing my thing. Mind you, I might not be the best racewalker, but I am a real racewalker. I follow all the rules.

The next 10 miles were actually pretty boring. To break up the monotony I decided I would racewalk the rest of the race. I racewalked on and off as much as I could and even when I would slow to a snails pace to catch my breath, I would try my best to stay in legal form (that’s racewalking lingo for, maintaining technique…ie forward knee locked and one foot on the ground at all times).

Miles 10 through 13 were the toughest. It was starting to get really warm , the sun was shining right in my face and I could actually feel myself overheating. I forced myself to drink both the electrolyte and plain water that was offered at each aid station, but I could still feel my calf muscles and left IT band wanting to spasm and lock up. I was also starting to breath pretty heavily, which is not a good thing for me, because it means that Im gonna be trapping a lot of air in my lungs. The problem with breathing fast, is that I cant exhale fast enough to make room for the next incoming breath. The longer this goes on, the more air that gets trapped in the smaller airways of my lung .Eventually my lungs will blowup like a balloon.
For most of the race I was averaging an inhaler hit about once every half mile, but that increased to about 2 hits every half mile the further into the race I got. In total, I used my puffer about 20 times. It sounds like a lot ..I know, but not unusual for me.

There was nothing really special about the finish line, except that I was very happy to see it. I tried to pace myself through the last 1/10th mile of the race , so that I could racewalk through the finish chute and look good on camera, but I ran out of steam just a few feet short of the finish mat and ended up just walking across it. Oh…well, they didn’t take my finish line photo anyway.

I walked into the finish area, a little disoriented and trying to catch my breath. I got my medal and made my way to the Family reunion area where I spotted Lizzy’s Mouse ears poking up in the distance. She had finished about 10 minutes ahead of me and looked as fresh as she did before the race. I, on the other hand, looked like crap! Anyway, we rested a little and waited for the others to arrive. Elizabeth came in about 15 minutes after I did and looked good as well. Both Lizz’s and the rest of the gang walked with me to pick up my gear bag, we took one last picture as a group, said our goodbyes..and that was it. My 9th half marathon…completed!

Due to a glitch in the electronic timing system, my actually finish time has to be manually verified , which will take a few more days, but I think I finished somewhere between 3:00-3:10, which is much faster than I anticipated. Not a PR for me, not even close, but considering everything, I think it a respectable finish time. I performed well in this race and I’m proud of myself.

Some after thoughts While it’s obvious that pushing myself too hard during this race may have contributed to my asthma exacerbation and hospitalization that followed, I’d like to point out to the naysayers ( the people who criticize my involvement as an asthmatic in these types of events) that out of the 14 races Ive done in 3 years ( 5 of those being full marathons), Ive only gotten sick 2 times as a result of them. Id also like to that say, that even “healthy” people get sick after doing marathons and MANY of them end up in a hospital! I train very hard for every race I do, and if I get sick now and then from over- doing it… big deal. I’m not going to stop doing what I love and what keeps me alive.

Sadly, 2 young runners died during this half marathon. Both collapsed close to the finish line.

Had a great weekend, one of the best actually, in quite some time. On Saturday I was breathing so well, that I was able to go a full 12 hours without having to take a neb treatment. I did use my inhaler a couple times, but overall, I think it was the best breathing day Ive had in the last 3 months and I am grateful.

Spent part of the weekend with two of my runner friends, Brandon and Rachel who came up for the marathon. I gave them a mini tour of the city like I always do, this time including a drive up to Twin peaks followed by lunch and shopping in the Castro. The weather was classic San Francisco with fog at the beach and total sun on the other side of the hill, perfect temps all weekend long.

After lunch we went out to the marathon Expo so my friends could pick up their bibs and goodie bags . I’m not sure why the SF marathon promoters moved the Expo so far away from the starting area where most people stay , but this is something Ive noticed happening at more and more marathon events. At the Rome marathon for example, the Expo is actually located a full 10 miles away from the actual race course. The Boston Expo is located 25 miles away from the starting line. I guess it has something to do with size and cost.

Later in the day we kicked back in their hotel room and picked through the goodie bags like they were Halloween candy bags or something. It was pretty much the standard stuff though… race advertisements, magazines, discounts coupons for shoes, chapstick a couple candy bars, etc.

My friend actually bought a bag full of 2006 finisher medals that they were selling at the Expo as coasters. They’re the actual finisher medals from that year, but without the ribbon attached. If you’ve never seen a SFM medal, these things are huge.
After a nice afternoon I said goodbye to my friends and headed home. I will meet up with them again in Las Vegas in 2 weeks for the ET marathon.

Sunday’s breathing wasn’t as good as Saturdays and I ended up needing a couple more neb treatments, but my breathing was still much better than in the previous weeks. Spent most of the day hanging around the house, eating junk food and trying to figure out what I’m gonna wear for ET race (costumes are big in that event.)

After a very depressing 3 months of bouncing in and out of the hospital and thinking I was near my end, this weekend gave me a little more reassurance that I still have a few good breathing days left in me…that are worth living for.

Congrats to all those who participated in the San Francisco marathon this weekend!

To say I’m worn out by the frantic pace of these last 3 months, would be an understatement. Going from the highest highs to the lowest lows, and everything in between, I’m flat out exhausted! I need a couple weeks of doing nothing overly physical , so that I can recharge my batteries and start all over again.

After last months flare-up, my lung function is gradually returning to baseline, but all those outdoor allergies have been kicking my butt. Ive even considered going back on <a href="http://allergies.about.com/od/medicationinformation/a/xolair.htm"target=_blank">Xolair. It didn’t do much for my asthma, but I think it helped with my allergy problem.

Of course, I’ve still been doing my 5 mile bridge walks 3x week. Nothing could stop me from doing those, it’s the only chance I get to racewalk, but that’s about it, as far as exercise goes. Ive been occupying most of my time, catching up with my blog reading, doing things around the house, and dealing with various media requests regarding my participation in the marathon. Earlier this week I gave an interview to a person who wants to write about me in her next motivational book.

This Saturday I’ll be out at the Al Zampa Memorial bridge in Crockett, Calif, to celebrate a friend and fitness walkers 1000th crossing of that bridge. That day will also mark my 800th crossing of the same bridge. I’ll write more about it next week!

Next race for me is the San Francisco Marathon ( 1/2 marathon–2nd half) . Finally, a world class event I don’t have to fly to

Have nice weekend all!

Think I have it bad? Meet my friend and fellow lung challenged athlete….Mike McBride.

Michael has really bad emphysema and has to be connected to supplemental oxygen 24 hours a day just to stay alive. He actually has a tiny hole in his neck , which allows the oxygen to be delivered directly to his lungs (what they call <a href="http://www.tto2.com/patients/scoop.asp"target="blank">” Transtracheal Oxygen ).

Well, despite the bad hand he was dealt in life, Michael competes in marathons and climbs Skyscrapers for fun ! (and for charity). What’s even more amazing, is that he has to to pull a 100lb cart behind him which holds his oxygen tanks. When he does a race he goes through so much oxygen (17 lpm), that he has to have people positioned along the course to help change out all the empty tanks …. A logistical marvel in itself.

On April 20th, 2009, Mike will be the very first person with severe emphysema ever granted a disability slot to compete in the Boston marathon, and I will be the first severe asthmatic to do the same.

Mike’s been a tremendous inspiration for me and many many others, sick or healthy. If it wasn’t for Mike, I don’t think I would have pursued Boston the way I did. When I first applied I didn’t think I stood a chance of getting in. It wasn’t until Mike broke the news about his own success in being accepted, that I suddenly felt a new sense of enthusiasm for what seemed so out of reach before.

Wouldn’t it be something if we pull this off !

PS……Mike did a stair climb today. 54 stories in 28 minutes! Hauling his oxygen and all. Absolutely amazing.

Couldn’t have happened to a nicer or more humble guy. Can you imagine…. walking 50 km ( 31 miles ) in 4:05….That’s crazy fast!!!!

Philip Dunn is one of my racewalking idols, and last year I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Portland Marathon . Oddly enough, he didn’t racewalk the marathon … he did that weird thing with the ski poles ( Nordic walking. ) He came in 1st place of course, which didn’t surprise me a bit. He occasionally teaches racewalking clinics with Dave Mc Govern and also belongs to my local walking club.

This will be Philips 2nd 3rd time at the Olympics and I know it’s been a long hard road for him to get there. Unlike some Olympians , the last time I spoke with Philip , he was working a part time job to support his new family AND still managed to maintain a full time workout schedule ……That’s a phenomenal feat in itself.

Good luck Philip ..We’re all so proud of you!
