I was on well on my way to setting a personal best, when at mile 21, I slipped on some wet paper cups, did a full summer salt, cut my finger open and tore a ligament in my knee. It took me almost 2 hours in excruciating pain to limp the last 5 miles of the race , but at least I finished. Jon Robertson my spotter ( bless his heart), bent the rules a little and stayed with me on the course right through the finish chute. In the end, despite the time I lost as a result of my little acrobatic maneuver, I still managed to finish the race 12 min faster than last year.

Hey, it wasn’t all bad. The spectators really out did themselves this year. Imagine experiencing this scene for 7 hours. My hands are raw from from having them high5’d so many times.

Thank you everyone for your support and well wishes. I’ll have a more complete race report up in a few days.

PS….Thank you Kerri, I just saw my Facebook Fan page. Naughty naughty..:-)

PPS…It was nice meeting you Chris and Laura!

You are amazing, my friend–super blessed to know you. [I think Spotter Jon will now be called Stellar Jon for being kick-ass and bending rules. I wanna high five you AND that dude!]

And PS. You know you loved all the crazy on the Facebook page. Just admit it ;D

    1. I swear to god I was deaf for awhile afterward.

Way to go!!! Sending good vibes your lungs' & knee's way. You apparently should've taken up gymnastics in addition to epic walking :P. RELAX, enjoy, celebrate you've done something only a few people ever do in their lives and even fewer do it 3 years running with time reductions each subsequent year.

    1. You didn\’t know I was a gymnast? Just call me Grace.

So one of my DM friends lost a tooth after a paper cup related fall at the London Marathon yesterday, you hit the cups and wiped out your knee… crazy stuff 🙁

So excited that you made it to the end, foot, lungs and knee notwithstanding. Hope you heal up fast.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Congrats Steve, I am so proud of you. See, I told you determination would rule the day. I hope your recovery is a speedy one.

Yeah, the water stations are tough to manage. Since I am a slow poke, I try to take the time to place my cup in the trash. That way it is one less cup for the workers to pick up, plus one less cup for the walkers to slip on. I found out during the Disney half marathon, that the GU station was down right slick. I just about went down on them. There was GU packets littering the ground and the gel was like walking on ice. I was much wiser the next day during the marathon. So, new half marathoners should try to be cautious at these stations.

    1. Thx James. Yea, for reason at the Boston marathon they don\’t sweep away the cups until AFTER the race. Im sure people would be more than happy to put their cups in a trash can if they made them available. I always put mine ion the trash.

      1. James says:

Yes, you are right. If they had trash cans out, it would have helped. I agree, majority of marathoners would throw their cups in the trash. Wow, slipping on a cup 5 miles out, talk about unlucky.
